Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child
Tamra Davis 2009 | U.S. Documentary Competition, World Premiere
Where was his friend Schnabel when Basquiat needed him? This is a beautiful film, with glorious art, great music, and fine pacing, all laced with Basquiat's boychild playfulness and seductive ways. But, to see him rise from the streets, go on to incredible fame & fortune, and die of an OD in 10 years is terrible painful.

CASINO JACK and the United States of Money
Alex Gibney 2009 | U.S. Documentary Competition, Political, World Premiere
Of the documentaries I saw this week, this one was the most focused, powerful, and relevant. Especially with the recent Supreme Court decision, the Casino Jacks can act with impunity. They will not even need to bother with sham foundations and indirect donations. Let the money flow/ watch democracy go!

Bhutto
Duane Baughman, Johnny O'Hara 2009 | U.S. Documentary Competition, Political, World Premiere
For helping us to understand Pakistan's tragic and pivotal history, this film is invaluable. But, I must agree that the editing was troublesome. Also, the movie asserts that the only choices for Pakistan are oppressive military dictatorships, oppressive Islamic fundamentalists, and the progressive Bhuttos. I am not convinced that their legacy is truly that progressive. But, the alternatives may actually be that daunting.
