The Killer Inside Me
Michael Winterbottom 2009 | Premieres, World Premiere
Some of my group walked out after the first 15 minutes due to the gratuitous violence. I agreed it was more violent than it needed to be but I thought Affleck's performance was excellent, as was the design and the cinematography. Hudson and Alba did a pretty good job, but it is curious why they would agree to be in a film that depicted a man who hated women. In the Q&A, the director was challenged on why he chose to shoot the violent scenes and his response was unhelpful in answering why he was so attracted to this material and chose to be as graphic as he was. It was brutal.

Holy Rollers
Kevin Asch 2009 | U.S. Dramatic Competition, World Premiere
I didn't love this film, although I really wanted to. Very interesting story, "inspired" by true events, I thought they could do much more with the material than they did. I did think they captured the feel of the NY Brooklyn Hasidic life and the 2 leads were great. Just didn't think it went deep enough.

Abel
Diego Luna 2009 | Premieres, First Feature, World Premiere
I loved this film. A beautifully crafted story about a boy who channels the trauma of his father's abandonment by becoming his father. Great acting and a fantastic script. A very special film.
