Saint Louis Blues
Dyana Gaye 2009 | Spotlight, Music
Beautifully done and refreshing in the tradition of African (or any!) film. If it had been 10 minutes shorter, I'd be absolutely raving about it. The performances are deceptively perfect and heighten the schtick with matter-of-fact precision. Ultimately enjoyable!

Pumzi
Wanuri Kahiu 2009 | Spotlight, Political, Environmental
This is a startling clear and rich narrative, so important in this day and age of environmental and social degradation. Kahiu has created a thing of challenging beauty and metaphoric depth that will hopefully be seen by many, many people....and understood for its essential message to humanity. This is African film at its finest and human story-telling at its best. We are living in Maitu now....if you don't know what this means, you haven't seen one of the best movies at Sundance 2010. Not only is this an extremely well-done film, it is ultimately socially functional, must-see viewing for a world of humans challenged in its relationship to water in particular and nature and each other in general. This film has so much to offer. Wanuri Kahiu should be followed very closely. This narrative-creator, story-teller, film-maker is a genius, not only in her filmic skill, but in how she was able to create and produce and deliver THIS particular film. We have much to learn from Ms. Kahiu.

Climate Refugees
Michael Nash 2009 | Spotlight, Political, Environmental, World Premiere
What a powerful film...essential "reading" for the modern citizen of the world. To put a human face on the issue and reality of climate change and the subsequent human population migrations is such an important dynamic. Nash and his team have created an important document of our modern world's greatest challenge. This is highly recommended for anyone alive on this earth who can get to a theater....We must be able to find this documentary easily in the world and soon.
