Grown Up Movie Star
Adriana Maggs 2009 | World Cinema Dramatic Competition, First Feature
Unique story. Cinematography reflected the bleakness of the lives of the characters. Well acted.

I Am Love
Luca Guadagnino 2009 | Spotlight
The cinematography is beautiful, the acting is excellent, it's an intricate story, but this film is about 20 minutes too long, which detracts from the overall effect. The excess time is spent on up-close shots of raindrops, body parts and flowers and, honestly, it gets a bit boring. The viewer wants to get on with the story!

Sympathy for Delicious
Mark Ruffalo 2010 | U.S. Dramatic Competition, First Feature, World Premiere
I didn't get this film but think it could have been done without the dysfunctional rock band backdrop which was loud and distracting. Following the story required a leap over realism and facts, making the premise just plain silly. The acting, however, was excellent for the most part.

The Dry Land
Ryan Piers Williams 2009 | U.S. Dramatic Competition, First Feature, Political, World Premiere
Dark subject matter but important message that needs to be seen by all Americans who have become complacent about the U.S. role in Iraq; realistic and painful to watch but a must-see film. Hope this makes it to wide distribution. Superb acting.

Kick in Iran
Fatima Geza Abdollahyan 2009 | World Cinema Documentary Competition, First Feature, Political, Sports, World Premiere
Disappointing. I sensed that the subtitles were incomplete, leaving lots of questions about the subject matter of the film. And I question the editing and felt some scenes were out of place, making it difficult to follow the story.

Contracorriente (Undertow)
Javier Fuentes-León 2009 | World Cinema Dramatic Competition, First Feature
Moving subject matter, excellent story, superbly acted and very well done. Unfortunately, the subtitles are distracting for English-speaking audience because more than half of them were lost on the background, so some meaning was lost. Hope the filmmaker can improve the quality of the subtitles if this goes into wide distribution.
